I’ve been using essential oils for almost 6 years. But I’ll be honest, I intentionally steered clear of the direct sales brands like Young Living for a long time. Then my friend, Jess, changed my mind.
It’s not that I had anything against any particular brand of oils. I was just really turned off by this rift between users of this brand versus that brand. There’s this adage in the business world that if you are talking about your competition, number 1, you are NOT in first place, and number 2, you are NOT confident in your product. And since everyone in the DS EO world seemed to be dissing their competition, I couldn’t help but feel like all the oils were probably pretty much the same in the end. And if they’re all the same, I might as well buy a brand that I can get from a conventional retailer and skip the whole process of having to find a distributor and listening to their sales pitch about why their brand is better than the others.
Why I Started Buying Young Living Essential Oils
Then I had coffee with Jess and she changed my mind. Funny thing is, she didn’t even know she was changing my mind. She wasn’t trying to change my mind. She didn’t even know my mind needed changing. Jess just happened to share her love of oils while we sipped and snacked. I was looking for something to help me focus during the workday, and she had some ideas. That’s really how it started. I had a need and she had the knowledge to help me.
I loved that she took the time to sit with me and listen. That went a long way with me, so much so that I decided to buy the Premium Starter Kit . It came with two of the oil blends I wanted try (along with several other oils and a diffuser), and I felt good about supporting her business. Because she is a great friend and she listened to me.
Jess never once gave me a sales pitch. She never gushed about why her brand was the best and never mentioned competing brands. She just listened to me and shared her knowledge. I had questions and she had answers and ideas. Having her as a resource has given me much more confidence in using my oils than when I just relied on the Google machine.
Then Jess invited me to her Facebook community. This is the part that converted me to a loyal customer. Jess has lots of knowledge and she sincerely loves the products she is using. When I’m talking with her or reading her posts, I don’t feel like she is selling oils. I feel like she is sharing knowledge and ideas that she is genuinely excited about. And that resonates with me.
I made my first Young Living purchase because Jess suggested a few oils that interested me. Now, I am a loyal Young Living customer because she welcomed me into her essential oils community. I feel much more confident in using my essential oils because when I buy something new, I have a friend with lots of knowledge I can turn to with my questions.
Of course, I can always still buy oils from other retailers, like Amazon or websites for specific brands. But they don’t offer the connection and community I get with Young Living. No one from Amazon is going to come meet me for coffee and give me some ideas on what oils to use and how and when to use them. And when I buy my Young Living oils, I am supporting my friend in her small business. That’s a feeling those retailers just can’t compete with.
