I’m a regular mom who just wants to keep her family happy, healthy, and grounded. That’s really what Little Bits of Granola is all about. This is where I share my thoughts, ideas, tips, advice, questions, answers, and lessons learned about natural and simple living.
I started my natural-living journey about 9 years ago. I was fresh out of college (oh. my. gosh. Has it really been that long?!?) and working at my first “real job”. My undergrad degrees are in building design and construction related fields and I was just learning about ‘green building’. I was utterly fascinated and obsessed and soon earned a professional credential in that specialty.
I had never given much thought to how we impact the natural environment and how that, in turn, impacts us. In fact, when we first bought our house, I was so excited that we had curbside recycling that I was excited that I could now buy a couple of cases of bottle water each week without feeling guilty. I was blind to the real truth of bottled water and its impacts on the earth (and our health).
But the more I learned, the more I cared, and the more I changed. Eventually, I also began to learn about our food system and about making smarter food choices. I learned more about consumerism and how it drives our throw-away culture. I just knew I needed to do better. And the more I learned about how I could do better, the more I wanted to help other people do the same.
The simple-living part of my journey didn’t really come into play until just a few years ago. My life got a little crazy around the time my 2nd baby arrived. You can read more about that journey here, but in short, I was at the brink of collapse and new I needed to make some big changes. And I’ve been sharing my thoughts and experiences here at Little Bits of Granola because I believe what happened with me happens to lots of people and sometimes it helps just to hear what someone has to say about it.
I started this blog with the idea of sharing with others that “going green” doesn’t have to be all or nothing. I used to get so stressed and overwhelmed at the choices I was faced with each day that impacted the health of my loved ones and the environment. Then I realized that while I was worrying so much about making the absolute healthiest choices possible for my family and doing everything I can to protect the environment, I was actually doing the exact opposite for myself. I realized I needed to simplify and get back to basics. Little Bits of Granola is where I share as I learn and grow.
