During 2015, I indulged in quite a bit of navel-gazing. And one of the things I realized was that I am a generally happier person when I am in the middle of a good book. Problem is, I was not reading very regularly. I would pick up the odd book here or there and read it through. But then once I’d finished, I’d go weeks (or even months) without even thinking about reading another. I was lucky if I read 4 books in a year. That’s crazy for someone who loves to read and is genuinely made happier by reading enjoyable books!
I decided to be a bit more cognizant and intentional about my reading habits. Toward the later part of 2015, I committed to myself that I would go no longer than 3 days between books. I’ve got a to-read list a mile long, so it was tough to even decide where to begin. Then a friend brought over her full set of Harry Potter books and suggested I read those.
I love reading fiction, but I also go through bouts of reading non-fiction. And lately, I’ve been really into self-improvement type of books, especially those that focus on overall contentment and happiness and simple living. Books like The Happiness Project, The Joy of Less, and Living Well Spending Less.
In an attempt to be proactive and intentional, I’ve promised myself that I will read at least 12 books in 2016. From my mile-long list of books to read, I’ve selected 6 fiction and 6 non-fiction. The fiction selection was super easy because I’ve got to finish the Harry Potter series! And the non-fiction selection was made pretty easy too, using Amazon’s and GoodReads’ recommendation tools.
So here’s what I plan to read in 2016. Have you read any of these books? What books would you recommend based on this selection? What do you plan to read in 2016?
